Being Online: Visual expressions of  youth experiences of digital well-being

About this project

DTH-Lab is pushing for young people’s digital well-being to become a global public health priority.

This project is part of our work to address the digital determinants of health: the characteristics, features, uses and governance of digital technologies and digital ecosystems that influence health-related behaviours, health outcomes and healthcare delivery.

To further this work and strengthen efforts to support healthier digital environments for young people, we are curating a digital gallery.

About the gallery

Being Online is a digital gallery by DTH-Lab in collaboration with Global Mental Health Action Network – Child & Youth Working Group. It will bring together creative works that show what it means to grow up, connect and express yourself in a digital world, and how these experiences shape health and well-being.

By showcasing a range of online experiences and encouraging conversations between generations, this space will enable young people to contribute their stories and create a shared visual narrative of life online.

Why it matters

The online world is a big part of our daily lives. It helps us connect, learn and express ourselves. But it can also bring challenges: pressure, misinformation or feeling overwhelmed.

By sharing your artwork, you can help others understand what being online really feels like and why talking about these experiences matter.

What we’re looking for

We invite children and young people to visually express what “being online” means to you.

You can explore themes such as:

  • How do you feel when you’re online? (happy, curious, frustrated, calm?)
  • Have you found friendship or support online?
  • Have you ever felt digitally overloaded or disconnected?
  • What do you think about identity, privacy or belonging online?
  • Does the internet help or distract you from the physical world?
  • What does a digital detox mean to you?
  • How does being online affect how you see yourself and your health?

Your interpretation is completely up to you – we just want to see your perspective.

Who can join
  • Open to children and young people worldwide up to 30 years old.
  • If you’re under 18, a parent or guardian should submit your artwork.
  • You don’t need to be a trained artist, anyone can join!
What you can submit

You can share any original visual artwork that expresses your experience of being online, such as:

  • Digital illustrations
  • Photographs or photo essays
  • Images of hand-drawn or painted work

Each piece should include a short description (maximum 150 words) about what inspired it or what story it tells.

AI-generated artwork will not be accepted.

Format and requirements

FILE REQUIREMENTS

We invite children and young people to visually express what “being online” means to you.

  • File type: Upload your artwork as a PNG, TIFF, PDF or JPG file.
If you’re submitting a photo essay, please compile all images and captions into one single PDF file before uploading.
  • Image quality:
    - Please make your image a square.
    - Between 2000 × 2000 px and 4000 × 4000 px
    - It should be clear and not blurry.
    - Avoid screenshots or very compressed images.
  • File size: The file should be no larger than 10 MB.
  • Save your file as Name_Title.jpg

Important: If you have a higher-resolution version of your artwork, please keep it safely stored. We may request it later for printing or display.

Tips:

  • You can make your image square by using the crop tool on your phone/tablet and choosing 1:1 or square option.
  • You can check the image size under “details” or “Info” on your device.
Once the image is square, you’ll see two equal numbers, like 3000 × 3000 or 2400 × 2400.
This number should be between 2000 and 4000.
  • If your artwork is hand-drawn or painted, please take a clear, well-lit photo or scan so that details are visible.

TERMS OF SUBMISSION

  • Your artwork must be your own original creation.
  • Submissions must not include hate speech, explicit content or identifiable personal details without consent.
  • If your work features other people (e.g. in a photograph), you must have their permission.
  • Submissions are accepted only through the official online form.
  • By submitting, you allow DTH-Lab to display your name, age and place of residence with your artwork.
